Objectives : The purpose of this study was to survey the sexuality-related knowledge and satisfaction with sexuality education in order to plan an effective sexuality education for high school students.
Methods : The data were collected by self-administered Questionnaire between May 1 and June 30, 1999. The study subjects were 492 10th grade students who visited a health examination center of a general hospital located in Daegu Metropolitan city. Descriptive statistics. χ²test in SPSS program were used for data analysis.
Results : About 63.4% of boys and 59.3% of girls reported that they were not satisfied with the sexuality education, and 75.3% of boys and 89.2% of girls reported the need of a sexuality education the reason for need of sexuality education was an accurate knowledge about sexuality in 61.3% of boys and 73% of girls. Students reported that they preferred a physician(31.2% of boys and 42.1% of girls) as a sexuality educator. In the self-reported knowledge about sexuality, students had poor knowledge about sexually transmitted disease and contraception. The most interesting item was a friendship with the opposite sex, followed by sexual activity (17.4% of boys) and child birth (14% of girls).
Conclusions : These results suggest that an effective sexuality education program is needed and the education shoud focus on sexual activity, contraception and child birth. The health care provider must faciliate open discussion with adolescent parents on sexuality and sexual health.
